GB6HS was back on the air for Jamboree on the Air 2013. Operated by members of Worthing Radio Events Group, the station put Scouts from Brighton & Hove district in touch with their counterparts around the world.

Many club members were able to participate in the enormously popular "Islands on the Air" contest on the 27th July 2013 but there was a lot of work behind the scenes to make it happen. We made some amazing contacts for a few hours until the lightning arrived and the antenna was hastily taken down. Read on for details and photos.....

The 4th Backpackers' Contest coincides with the 144MHz Low Power contest so is run on a Saturday instead of a Sunday and starts later in the day. This session was a solo effort by Gary, G0XAN.

Having been unable to arrange a day out at the field in June, and with the chance of some decent weather, it was decided to dedicate July's "activity day" to erecting and testing the club's Superloop antenna in preparation for the IOTA contest at the end of the month.

For a summer series of portable contests, the RSGB Backpackers' series seems to attract remarkably poor weather to the South Downs! However, this time - for the first time in about two years - the weather was warm and sunny and the tent could be safely left at home.

The second RSGB 144MHz Backpackers' contest coincides with the Practical Wireless 144MHz QRP contest, so it is usually a busy day on the 2m band. With the contests starting at 10am local time and the PW contest running for 7 hours it's an early start and a long day on the hill.
For the first time in over 2 years the weather forecast for the day of the contest was for dry weather and even sunshine! Given the duration of the contest and the moderate wind it was still necessary to pack the tent. It can get very cold indeed sitting on the top of a hill all day, even in Sussex.
