This year the M0REG/P team only managed to enter three of the Backpackers' Contests, meaning that all three would count towards the overall score with none "spare".
The year got off to something of an inauspicious start, although we came 5th in the May contest we were so far behind the winner that we only scored 230 points. June saw a big improvement as although we still came 5th our score improved to 564 points. Our final effort of the season was September where we placed 4th, although we were still a long way behind the leaders with 392 points. (In each session the leader's score is normalised to 1000 points.)
Overall, somewhat surprisingly, we achieved 4th place with 1186 points, an improvement on last year's 5th place. Although with 850 points separating us from third place we have a big challenge ahead of us to improve on our placing again next year!

Most pleasingly, we did not drop a single point due to logging errors throughout the entire contest series!

The PW contest runs coincident with the June Backpackers' contest so we decided to operate for longer and enter both contests. The going got very slow after the end of the Backpackers' contest and we called it a day about an hour before the end of the contest, having worked every signal we could find on the band! When the results were published, we were pleased to have managed 15th place, especially as Worthing & District Amateur Radio Club operating from nearby Chantry Hill only managed 23rd!
Stop Press: On 20th February 2012 we received a certificate from Practical Wireless, as we were Square Winners for IO90. Sometimes it is advantageous to be stuck on the South Coast!

In the first contest, in May, we did very well to come in third place. This was to be our best placing, with 5th place in June, 8th in July and 4th in both August (despite only operating for two hours) and September. Overall in the Backpackers' Championship we managed 7th place in the 3W Backpackers' section with 1055 points from our three best sessions which were May, June and September.
